Kaltjiti community is situated in the far northwest corner of South Australia and lies between the Everard and Musgrave Ranges in the Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands. In the heart of this small community sits the Kaltjiti Art Centre — a powerhouse of creativity and cultural knowledge. Through their artworks, elders and senior artists teach younger generations about important cultural traditions and stories, passing on knowledge that has come to them from their ancestors. The paintings are rich, compelling and powerful: They are Rikina!

Tjukurpa nyangatja panya wati kutarara munu minyma kangkurura. Wati Panya kutjara kutarara palu pula wanampi kutjara. Panya piltatila paluru pula kapingka patara ungu ngaringi minyma panya palumpa pulampa patara. Ka pula mai-ku anu ngura parari ka pula patara patara pakuri-ngu.
This is a story about two brothers and two sisters. The two ‘wati’s’ (brothers) - two water snakes, are at the Piltati rockhole waiting for two sisters. The two women had gone to find ‘mai’ ( food), they were gone a long time and the men were hungry. They all live there in this rockhole.

Ngayulu kulini painta nyangatja palyara panya iriti mulapa tjulpun-tjulpunpa walka wiru tjuta tjara ngarapai.
This painting reminds me of the tapestries I used to make and all the beautiful flowers in bright greens, pinks, blues, whites, yellows and purples in bloom after the rain. In those days you could drink the water from the leaves of the flowers.

Nyangatja seven sister-nya tjukurpa ngayulu Wangkanyi Ngayuku mama-ku nguraku tjukurpa. Minyma paluru tjana Kapilta nguru pitjala kulila wirkanu munuya kapi tjikira mapakanu Puntila kutu munu mapakanu wirkanu Kungka-uula ngura tjunu. Ka wati panya paluru rawangku wananingi palutjana tjana ngarira tjinturingkula ma-pakanu ngura panya Alkarala kutu.
This is the seven sisters story. I was given this story by my father, David Curley. It’s about seven sisters who are running away from nyiru (a man who is after the oldest sister). They travelled all the way from Port Pirie and then travelled around Australia before ending in the Desert. The sisters kept changing to trick the man, but he kept changing too. This is a very important Tjurkurpa — true story.
