Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka and Salon Art Projects present the collection of 2019 Gapan Gallery limited edition prints from Yirrkala Print Studio.

In 1996 a dedicated print studio was built in the Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre, north-east Arnhem Land. The space has provided established Yolŋu artists with the opportunity to print fulltime, and to foster ongoing engagement with younger Yolŋu printmakers. Yirrkala Print Studio has become one of Australia’s premier print studios and enables ongoing collaborations with visiting master printers and artists. Gapan Gallery 2019 includes a stunning suite of collagraph prints by senior artists, a series of self portraits by emerging artists exploring female Yolŋu identity, the third series of soft-ground ‘string figure’ etchings and other linocuts, screenprints and etchings produced by Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka artists.

Mullet travelled from river to river, ocean to ocean, looking for their destiny. This is at Gurka'wuy. They also travelled to other various communities. We sing a song, and dance as well, to carry the tide of Gurka'wuy water, bringing the guya (fish) into the river, to Trial Bay. There is a place called Marraŋu, Golumala, they sing the song there, where the three rivers come together. The water is called Gudutja and they are looking for their destiny, just like you and I tracing our family tree on a computer, looking for our great, great grandfathers and grandmothers.

This work is an extension of a phase where the artist of her own motion explored lesser known plant species which she feared were being forgotten by younger generations. This coincided with artist John Wolseley’s interest in returning to Yilpara (after they had met during the Djalkiri project of 2010) and the two spent an extended period exploring the botany of Blue Mud Bay. John Wolseley spent a week at Yilpara with Mulkun in May 2012 and again at Yirrkala in June 2013, June 2014 and then May and December 2015.

Mulkun has been finding new ways to paint and promote nutritional plants that are no longer eaten widely. As a child there were very many healthy old people and now there are few. In those days old people lived for a long time without illness. She blames poor diet and the loss of knowledge.

In 2017 accompanying Mulkun and John Wolseley's NMA show Miḏawarr | Harvest, the book of the same name was published with words by Mulkun Wirrpanda (MW), Merrkiyawuy Ganambarr-Stubbs (MGS), Greg Leach (GL) and Glenn Wightman (GW).

Following this theme she moved on to painting varieties of Maypal or shellfish and these were exhibited in a sold out show at Salon in Darwin in August 2018.

This work was made as a collagraph with a later overlay of screenprint.

Barayuwa has created this print to honour his mother’s Munyuku clan, inspired by her brother, the late ritual specialist and artist Ḏula Ŋurruwutthun. It is associated with the ancestral events relating to the death of the ancestral whale called Mirinyuŋu on the beaches of the Munyuku saltwater estate of Yarrinya within Blue Mud Bay. Known in English as Point Blane.

In 2013 Barayuwa started to hide the elements of a whale skeleton in this style of work. A work in the NATSIAA of this year was Highly Commended by the judges and caught the eye of the Director of the NGA Ron Radford who commissioned a work. An installation which was exhibited at the NCCA in Darwin led MCAA Director Liz-Anne McGregor to commission a conceptual wall work for their permanent collection.

There is perhaps a hidden reference to the dangers of overconsumption. The resources of highly prized fat in a beached whale are equivalent to gold in a hunting society. But in the temperatures and conditions of the Top End the dangers of contamination are real. But also a decomposing whale can become a literal bomb and the internet shows videos of massive explosions when the stomach cavity is pierced releasing the pent up gases.

This print was created by the initial collage of glue and sand being layed down on a board which was printed from and then a second layer of screenprint overprinted with the finer marwat (cross hatch).

Our father Munggurrawuy painted the story of Djulpan. This story is about seven sisters who went out in their canoe called Djulpan. During certain seasons they used to go hunting for food and always come back with different types of food. As you can see they would come back with turtle, fish ,freshwater snakes and also bush foods like yams and berries. They can now be seen in the sky of a night , seven stars that come out together like they are shown on the painting.

The stars come in season when the food and berries come out, the stars w ill travel through the sky during that month until the season is over and they don’t come out until the next season. They are the constellation called Plaiedes and they are being chased by three brothers (Orion). They sail over the Northern horizon and when they get home they light their fires.

Baratjala is a Madarrpa clan estate adjacent to Cape Shield where the artist visited by canoe with her father and his many wives as a young girl. Her father’s name was Mundukul and this is also the name of the serpent (also known as Water Python, Burrut’tji or Liasis Fuscus) which lives deep beneath the sea here.

This design shows the deep water and the ‘curse’ or oath that the snake spits into the sky in the form of lightning from this place.

At the base of the image a rock sits firm in the Madarrpa land against which this sea crashes.

The background design was created by taking a collagraph from a heavily worked glue paste applied to a board and the overlay was created by screenprint.
